NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Pelicans and Louisiana-based Smoothie King have reached a 10-year agreement to rename the New Orleans Arena as the Smoothie King Center. Pete Maravich Jersey . Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha said such a deal had been a "gigantic" piece of owner Tom Bensons business plan since he bought the long-struggling small-market franchise from the NBA in the spring of 2012. "Finding a naming rights partner was key to the long-term financial viability of this franchise in this market," Lauscha said. Benson, who has owned the Saints since 1985, purchased citys NBA franchise — formerly called the Hornets — for $338 million and has consolidated the headquarters and many of the business operations of both clubs. The hope was that with the two franchises sharing resources and cross-promoting one another, the region could better support two major professional sports teams. Officials with both the club and Smoothie King declined to release financial terms of the deal, which also gives Smoothie King an option for a 10-year extension. Smoothie King owner Wan Kim said sponsoring an NBA arena in New Orleans helps his company demonstrate its commitment to the community where it is based while promoting its brand globally. Smoothie King, founded in suburban New Orleans in 1973, has 674 locations in 31 states and in Asia, and is looking to expand both nationally and overseas, Smoothie King President Tom OKeefe said. Of 30 NBA cities, 21 currently have Smoothie King franchises, he said. The arena is officially being renamed on Thursday, in time for next weeks NBA All-Star festivities in New Orleans. Kim, a native of South Korea who attended college and business school in the United States, bought the company in July 2012. He said he initially considered moving its headquarters to Atlanta or Dallas. "I started to realize a lot of people who live in New Orleans, for them, its very difficult to leave the city," Kim said. "Its a very different city. Its very unique, culturally, and I did start to see why people didnt want to move. "At the same time, I did feel our root is here and I shouldnt give up on that," Kim said. "Not only did we decide not to move out, but we are pretty much telling you (with the naming rights deal) that our group is here and we are sticking with it." As part of the agreement, Smoothie King will be airing commercials during Pelicans broadcasts, as well as sponsoring pregame and postgame segments. The companys smoothies will also be available at concession stands around the arena. Team officials said there were "two or three" other candidates for a naming rights deal, but that Smoothie Kings interests seemed most aligned with the Bensons goals of promoting the business climate in his home state. "Theres no more perfect story to say how businesses can root themselves in New Orleans and grow," said Rita Benson LeBlanc, Bensons granddaughter and a part owner of the Pelicans and Saints. She added that the agreement is "a testament to how New Orleans has recovered (from Hurricane Katrina) and how Louisiana is redefining itself as an economic development engine." The deal might have been completed before this season began, but because Smoothie King products contain nutritional supplements, NBA rules required that all of the companys products be tested to ensure there were no banned substances. LeBlanc said that process took about eight months. "We couldnt have any question as to what are the contents of the products that Smoothie King actually offers," LeBlanc said. Josh Smith Jersey . Hamiltons lap around the brand-new Sochi Autodrom was clocked in 1 minute, 38.513 seconds, which beat Rosbergs lap by 0.2 seconds. This 3.637-mile (5.853- kilometer), 18-turn street circuit is located on an Olympic venue. Sochi hosted the XXII Olympic Winter Games in February. Pole is a great place to start, said Hamilton, who will start first in a grand prix for the 38th time in his F1 career. An amazing job done by the team, constantly improving and moving forwards this year. Thanks to them. Were able to be on the front row quite often. Its great to come here (to Sochi). Its a beautiful place, and the weather has been amazing. Really enjoying driving this track. On his final run, Bottas had the quickest time in the first two sectors, but he got loose and ran wide in the final two turns, finishing 0.407 seconds behind Hamilton. I risked it a bit too much in the last two corners, went a little bit wide, and when you go offline, its really slippery like everyone saw. and that was it, Bottas said. Hamilton, who has won the last three grand prix (Italy, Singapore and Japan), enters Sundays Russian GP with a 10-point lead over Rosberg. Every race is important at the moment, Rosberg said. We have four to go. They are all just as important. Today, Lewis was quicker - all weekend really. So, Ive been working hard to try to get close but didnt manage to get closer than those two tenths (of a second) now, but thats the way it is. I need to accept that. Mercedes has swept the front starting row nine times this season, including five straight grand prix, a streak that began in Belgium on the fourth weekend in August. It wasnt the easiest session, Hamilton said of qualifying for the Russian GP. These guys (Rosberg and Bottas) were looking quite strong. Just hookingg up a lap from some reason it wasnt the same as practice. Mike Muscala Jersey. But Im really grateful that I got the pole here for the first time. Its going to be tough tomorrow. Its a long way down to turn one, so well find out how that works out. If Hamilton or Rosberg wins this race, then Mercedes will clinch the F1 constructors championship. Mercedes currently holds a 190-point lead over its closest competitor, Red Bull. Jenson Button placed his McLaren fourth on the grid, while Russian Daniil Kvyat from Toro Rosso qualified a career-best fifth in front of his home crowd. It feels great securing P5 in todays qualifying here in my home country, Kvyat said. Im very happy we could put it all together and achieve my best ever qualifying result. The car felt very good and everything worked out well, so well done to the team. Kevin Magnussen from McLaren finished sixth in qualifying, but Magnussen received a five-spot grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. He will start 11th. Magnussens penalty allowed Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull to move up to sixth on the starting grid, followed by Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. Ricciardos teammate, Sebastian Vettel, the four-time F1 world champion, failed to advance into the final qualifying round for the first time since the Austrian Grand Prix in June. Vettel will start 10th. I wasnt comfortable in the car today, Vettel said. It was very difficult. I think we took a step back from this morning (final practice), and we expected the rear to be a lot stronger and the track to pick up more than it did. The car felt nervous, so I couldnt take the speed into the corners. I lost the rear many times around the lap and therefore wasnt quick enough. Felipe Massa from Williams did not make it into the second round, as he qualified 18th. Massa experienced a fuel pressure problem. I had no real power throughout qualifying, and we were trying different things to resolve this out on track, but in the end, there was nothing I could do, Massa said. MARKHAM, Ont. Willis Reed Jersey . - Heartbreak has fuelled Canadas water polo teams for the better part of four years. Both the men and women narrowly missed out on playing in the 2012 London Olympics — the women by virtually the smallest of margins — and they havent forgotten. Its pretty much a constant thing, said mens goalie Robin Randall, who, at 34, has experienced the lows and highs of competing for Canada. Any time youre in a rut and you need to dig yourself of bed, and get in the car and go to practice, thats something you can think about. . . most of the time it adds to the fire thats already inside you.Canadas teams opened the UANA Cup on Wednesday night at the ATOS Markham Pan Am Centre, which is the water polo venue for this summers Pan American Games, and what the players hope will be the backdrop for a happier Olympic qualifying story. At the 2011 Pan Ams in Guadalajara, a gold medal would have meant an Olympic berth in London, but it wasnt to be for either team. The men lost 7-3 to the U.S. in their final. The womens loss was a more heartwrenching affair, an epic final that is believed to be one of the longest games ever. After ending regulation tied 8-8, followed by a scoreless overtime period, the U.S. edged Canada 19-18 in a penalty shootout for a 27-26 victory that left the Canadian women distraught on the pool deck. Its still motivation for me, said veteran Krystina Alogbo. It is hard, but all these moments bring that passion, that feeling that you still want it. We did come a hair short from qualifying, and its just that feeling of almost having it just gives you that extra feeling like you want it, you want to go get it.So looking back at small details (in the loss), thats the little things that coaches will give us, details in practices and you try to not to let that happen ever again. For the men, a victory at the Pan Am Games, July 10-26, would put them into the Rio Olympics. Failing that, theyll have a second-chance qualifier.I think we definitely are more prepared than we were (in 2011) to do what will be required to get a gold medal at the Pan American Games, said Canadas captain Kevin Graham, who plays professionally in Hungary. So, yeah, losses are really disappointing but they can be learned from and used as motivation to get the job done the next time. The women have to travel a tougher route to win one of the eight Olympic spots through a one-shot qualifying tournament in the spring of 2016.Canadas men will play Argentina and Brazil in this weeks UANA Cup, which is the Americas qualifier for this years world championships and a test event for the Pan Am Games. The women will play only Brazil after Puerto Rico withdrew. Both both squads its a chance to get accustomed to the $78 million, 2,000-seat seat Pan Am facility just northeast of Toronto.I think its a bit of a psychological edge, Randall said of a hometown Pan Am Games. Everybody else has to travel, everything is pretty familiar to us, we have normal food that were used to, everybody speaks the same language as us, and fans are going to be cheering for us. It will be good.Canadas men finished 11th at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which was the teams first appearance at the Games in 24 years. The Canadian women were fifth at the 2000 Sydney Games, then seventh four years later in Athens. They didnt qualify for Beijing or London. Bernard King Jersey . The Toronto Argonauts running back hurt his left ankle during the teams practice Friday afternoon at Rogers Centre.PRETORIA, South Africa - Oscar Pistorius murder trial enters a critical phase Monday as his defence team attempts to recover from a faltering start and reinforce the disabled athletes claim that he fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by mistake because he was overwhelmed by a long-held fear of violent crime. Pistorius mindset when he stood on his stumps in a bathroom and pulled the trigger on his 9 mm pistol in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013 remains the crux of the South African trial that has captured worldwide attention and is about to start its seventh week of globally televised proceedings. It was initially scheduled to run for three weeks. Judge Thokozile Masipa will analyze thousands of pages of testimony before she reaches a verdict, but ultimately must ponder the pivotal question: Did Pistorius fire his gun with the intention to kill or out of a misplaced belief that his life was in danger from a perceived intruder? South Africa does not have trial by jury, meaning Masipa will decide, with the help of two assessors, if Pistorius overall account is believable and whether the apparent inconsistencies in his testimony count against him or are unimportant in the bigger picture. If Pistorius defence, which will resume calling witnesses Monday after a two-week trial recess, can show that his story of a tragic error is a reasonable explanation, even the double-am****e runners shaky testimony would be rendered irrelevant and the judge should acquit him of murder, legal experts say. While testifying, Pistorius sometimes contradicted earlier testimony and other times said he did not remember details. "The test doesnt end there," former state prosecutor Marius du Toit said of Pistorius testimony. "Its not over. They (the defence) can still show there is another plausible scenario." Du Toit has over 20 years experience in South Africas criminal justice system and is following the trial closely. He said it must be shown that Pistorius had the "sole intention" to kill Steenkamp to be convicted of murder. Pistorius, 27, doesnt dis**** that he shot 29-year-old Steenkamp through a toilet door. Hee claims the killing was accidental and he fired four times in quick succession without thinking and while terrified, believing that an intruder had climbed up a ladder and through a bathroom window of his Pretoria villa in the pre-dawn hours and was about to come out of the cubicle and attack him. John Starks Jersey. . Prosecutors charge that the story is an intricate lie designed to cover up a murder. They say the couple fought, Steenkamp fled to the toilet screaming and Pistorius followed her and shot her through the wood door while they were arguing. She was hit in the hip, arm and head. Charged with premeditated murder, the first am****e to run at the Olympics faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted. He was once widely admired for overcoming the amputation of his lower legs as a baby to earn the right to run against the worlds top able-bodied athletes. The prosecutions case appeared to be bolstered as holes in Pistorius story were exposed when the athlete was on the stand for a fierce five-day cross-examination by prosecutor Gerrie Nel. Nel also succeeded in undermining the evidence given by the defences first two expert witnesses, a pathologist and a former police forensic scientist. But defence lawyers have only presented three of up to 17 witnesses they say they may ask to testify. At the outset of the defences case, lawyer Barry Roux said Pistorius actions on Valentines Day last year centred on his "disability" and "vulnerability" and Pistorius team will likely seek to rebuild the overall argument that his actions were guided by fear and not anger in a country with a high rate of violent home invasions. Roux said he will also show that a crucial thread of the prosecutions case is not true; that neighbours heard a woman screaming before and during the shots fired by Pistorius at around 3.17 a.m. on the fatal night. The lawyer said neighbours who live closer to Pistorius house in an upscale gated community in the suburbs of South Africas capital never heard a woman scream. Instead, it was Pistorius high-pitched shrieks for help after realizing his terrible mistake, the defence argues. They get paid a lot more, too.Schultz chipped in with a rare goal, and Wayne Simmonds, Chris VandeVelde, Brayden Schenn also scored, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.Sean Couturier added an empty-netter as Philadelphia won for the fourth time in five games while trying to make a desperate run at a playoff berth.Schultz snapped a tie game in the second period with his first goal of the season, ending a 125-game drought. The 13-year veteran has developed into perhaps the steadiest defenceman on the Flyers, and his 28th career goal in 948 games was a reward for his grit on the ice.He knew his scoreless skid was a long one — just not 125 games long.Is that how long its been? I knew it was a lot, he said, smiling. I knew it was over 100. Its nice to get one.Steve Mason made 36 saves for his second win in two games, though his first as a starter since Jan. 8. He had been sidelined with a knee injury and got the win against Arizona on Tuesday in relief of a shaky Ray Emery.Mathieu Perreault scored twice for the Jets. You cant wait until late March to get going. Weve got to get some wins, he said. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Schultz signed with Philadelphia in the off-season. He had 10 assists in 47 games this season and had not scored since he played for Edmonton on April 28, 2013. He had just five assists in 60 games last season. But Schultz was there to pounce on a loose puck and beat Michael Hutchinson, who had a shutout in his last start, for a 3-2 lead. Petra Straka got his first NHL point on the assist, and Ryan White also had his first assist of the season on the goal.It just kind of popped out and I wanted to make sure I didnt miss that one, Schultz said. The Flyers held on — and held off Perreault — from there.Perreault scored a pair of tying goals in the first period. He pounded in a rebound and fired a slapper from the right circle on the power play about 8 1/2 minutes later for his 16th and 17th goals of the season. The Jets slumped the rest of the way and have lost two straight following a five-game winning streak. There are pieces of our game that arent really good right now, coach Paul Maurice said.VandeVeldes seventh goal of the season came when he knocked in a loose puck from a scrum in front of the net for a 1-0 lead. Simmonds scored his 18th on the power play for a 2-1 lead midway through the first.Schenn made it 4-2 on a one-timer early in the third for his 11th goal this season.Mason seemed fully recovered from a bout with the flu and the knee injury that sidelined him for six games. He settled down after a shaky first and stopped all 11 shots in the second and 13 more in the third. The injury hasnt been a problem, which is great, Mason said. I thought my game felt sharper than (against Arizona), which is obviously a positive sign as well.NOTES: There is still no decision if Flyers D Kimmo Timonen will return from blood clots that have sidelined him this season. Louis Blues and back into top spot of the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings. The Sharks had been ranked No.WASHINGTON - Wizards coach Randy Wittman signed a contract extension Tuesday after leading the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. With its young backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal, Washington beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round before losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Wizards hadnt won a post-season series since 2005. Wittman was promoted to head coach when Flip Saunders was fired in January 2012, the third rebuilding project Wittman has undertaken. He has the worst regular-season record of anyone who has coached at least 400 NBA games — 191-329, a .367 winning percentage — since the league started in 1946. Wittman, in the final year of his contract, operated under a playoff-or-else edict from owner Ted Leonsis this season. "Its really the players who made the big decision, not only in the exit interviews the last couple of years and this off-season, but the way they responnded to him on the court," Leonsis said on the teams website. DeAndre Hopkins Jersey. "They respect their coach, they listen and like playing for him, and it shows." This season, Washington went 44-38, a 15-win improvement from a year ago, to finish fifth in a weak Eastern Conference. "This team and this organization have made significant strides over the last 2 1/2 seasons and Im excited to be a part of the next step in that process," Wittman said in a news release issued by the club. Wittman was scheduled to meet with reporters Wednesday. A day after being eliminated by the Pacers last month, Wizards players were full of praise for Wittman, appreciative of his tough-love tactics, his teaching methods and his game-day preparation. "He gets as much credit as the players," veteran forward Al Harrington said then. "I would really be upset if hes not the coach leading this team out of that locker room next year." CHICAGO -- For the Chicago Bulls, there is only way to ease the pain from the Luol Deng trade. Paulo Dybala Jersey . Just keep winning. D.J. Augustin had 20 points and 12 assists and Joakim Noah added 19 points and 14 rebounds, helping the streaking Bulls beat the Charlotte Bobcats 103-97 on Saturday night. Chicago had seven players score in double figures in its fifth consecutive victory. The Bulls (17-18) also improved to 3-0 since they traded Deng to Cleveland late Monday night for Andrew Bynum and draft picks. Chicago then cut Bynum in a salary dump. "The trade definitely hurt," Noah said in his first public comments since the deal. "Weve got to move on, but I feel confident in this team. Were working really hard. "A lot of people say this is a business, and all that, but this game is more than a business to me. I put everything Ive got into this. Lu was the same way, so it was hard for me to digest. Thats just my perspective. Everybody has a different job. Im not mad at anybody." Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau also wasnt a fan of the deal, but likes the way his team has responded. "I think its so important to be mentally tough when you face adversity," he said. "Theyve shown that throughout the year. Every time we get knocked down, we get back up -- and thats the mentality you have to have in this league. Things dont always go your way, and when they dont, you cant sit there and mope. Youve got to move on and get ready for the next one. "Ive said this before: If youre not satisfied with your circumstances, then you have to do everything you can to change them. I think thats what our team is doing. Were fighting, scratching, clawing. Whatever we have to do, thats what were gonna do." Mike Dunleavy scored 17 points for Chicago, which recovered after blowing a 15-point lead in the second half. Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bobcats (15-23) have dropped three straight. Gerald Henderson had 30 points, and Kemba Walker scored 29. Charlotte scored 22 of the last 29 points of the third to tie it at 70 heading to the final period. Walker had 13 points in the run, including a layup with 0.7 seconds to go. Josh McRoberts dunk gave the Bobcats a 73-72 lead in the fourth, but the Bulls then scored 11 straight points. Noah got the run started with a dunk and scored seven points in the surge. The key fourth-quarter run put Chicago ahead to stay. Walkers layup got Charlotte within four with 11.8 seconds to go, but Kirk Hinrich hit two foul shots to help the Bulls hold on. Chicago played without guard Jimmy Butler, who injured his left quad during Friday nights victory in Milwaukee. Butler has missed 13 games this season due to injury. Hinrich and Taj Gibson had 12 points apiece for the Bulls, who made 21 of 26 foul shots. Cartier Martin, who signed a 10-day contract with the Bulls on Friday, scored 11 in his first game with the team. Al Jefferson had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats, who went 19 for 20 at the line. Charlotte was outrebounded 46-34. The Bulls built a 52-42 halftime lead behind 13 points from Dunleavy, who has assumed the starting small forward spot previously held by Deng. Despite missing their two best players at the start of the season -- Deng and Derrick Rose, who is out for the season following knee surgery -- and another starter in Butler, the Bulls are in the midst of their best stretch of the season. "Were just going to go out there and give everything weve got," Noah said. "Theres no tanking . none of that. When people in Chicago say Chicago Bulls, I want them to be proud of that." NOTES: Jefferson had a total of 14 points in his two previous games before Saturday. "Hes in a dependent position," coach Steve Clifford said of Jefferson. "Its depending on the schemes of the way (opponents) play him." . The Bulls signed Cartier Martin to a 10-day contract on Friday and he finished with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting against Charlotte. MARTINSVILLE, Va. Mason Foster Jersey . - Being told he couldnt race last weekend because of an eye and vision problem will not make Denny Hamlin less likely to seek the help of medical staffs available at NASCAR tracks every weekend, he said Friday. Hamlin let Sam Hornish Jr. drive his car last weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., after he sought the assistance of the on-site medical team when his face swelled up and his vision blurred. Initially thought to be a sinus infection, it turned out to be a small piece of metal in his eye, Hamlin said at Martinsville Speedway. Hamlin said he doesnt blame the two doctors who examined him for failing to see the rusting metal, and it wasnt until he saw an optometrist that it was discovered, removed, and he started feeling better. "It took someone who was in the business of eyes to find it," he said. Hamlin has been cleared to return this weekend at Martinsville Speedway, where he has won four times, and he took umbrage at the notion that his reputation might have been tarnished when he missed the race. "People who think negatively of me or think that we side-stepped some sort of drug test or something is ridiculous," he said, adding that he was making an effort not to get angry at the suggestion that something untoward was afoot. "Im in one of the top-three cars in NASCAR. I would have to be an absolute moron — moron — to risk that." Dale Earnhardt Jr., who originally said he was concerned about Hamlins point of view about how he wound up being told he couldnt race, said his concern wasnt for the medical teams competency, but for his fellow driver. "I feel great about the process and what NASCAR has had in place for years," Earnhardt said. NASCAR travels with two registered nurses who have access to each drivers medical records each week, and tracks work with local doctors and hospitals to staff a full trauma unit when cars are on the track. Hamlin, 34, said hes frustrated by spending so much time answering medical questions. The Fontana race was where he sustained a broken back a year ago, and he rushed back into competition hoping to make the playoffs, but came up short. "I feel better than I ever have," he said. "Pilates has changed my life as far as my back is concerned. My back is no longer an issue — knock on wood. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Al Jefferson is happy he didnt make the All-Star game. Kemba Walker said it might be a huge blessing for the Charlotte Bobcats that the big man got a few days off to rest his 29-year-old legs for the stretch run, particularly with four games in five nights coming out of the break. "Im glad he didnt make it either," Walker said with a laugh. "Hes fresh now. And you dont have to make the All-Star game to be an All-Star. I know hes a great player and unguardable in the post." Jefferson dominated the Pistons for the third time this season Wednesday night, and Walker played his best game since returning from an ankle injury to lead the Bobcats to back-to-back wins over Detroit, 116-98. Jefferson scored 29 points, while Walker had 24 points and a career-high 16 assists. The win gives the Bobcats (25-30) a sweep of the season three-game series and a 2 1/2-game lead over the Pistons in the race for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "We had a bad reputation around this league for a long time, at least since Ive been here," Walker said. "Coach (Steve Clifford) has done a great job of changing the culture. We just want to win. We dont want to be those Bobcats where guys come in here and beat us up every night." The 6-foot-10, 289-pound Jefferson, who had 32 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in Tuesdays 108-96 win at Detroit, went 12 of 20 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. He has scored at least 20 points in 16 of the last 18 games and barely missed his seventh 30-point game in the last 10 games. Jefferson said the Bobcats (25-30) are playing their best basketball of the season as they gear up for the stretch run and a shot at the franchises second career playoff appearance. "We have been a top 10 on defence all year," Jefferson said. "But now our offence is picking up and were learning how to play with each other." Frustration seems to be setting in for the Pistons, who have lost nine of 14. Brandon Jennings had 20 points for Detroit before being ejected from the game with 1:13 left after picking up his second technicall foul for arguing a call. Dustin Hopkins Jersey. Jennings did not speak to the media after the game. "We definitely have to do a better job as a team of keeping our composure, especially in tough games like this," teammate Greg Monroe said. "Down the stretch these games mean a lot. You know, keeping a level head and playing hard, as a team is something were going to have to do." Coach John Loyer said its not too late to regroup. "Its two games," Loyer said. "Granted its two that we wanted to get, two we needed to get, but we didnt get them. You move on. You figure out your next plan and you just try to go win the next game." Josh McRoberts chipped in with 15 points for the Bobcats and Ramon Sessions had 10 points and 10 assists off the bench. But its Jefferson who is setting the tone. "We are just getting acclimated to Al," Walker said. "It took a little while but we know how to play with him and play off him. He makes all the right plays. All we have to do is get him the basketball in the right spots all we have to do is make shots." The Bobcats led by six at halftime, but opened the second half with a 17-3 tear to take a 70-50 lead behind 3-pointers from Walker, McRoberts and Gerald Henderson. The Pistons got within nine in the fourth quarter, but McRoberts buried a pair of 3-pointers and Walker hit a jumper to put the Bobcats safely ahead. Loyer stressed before the game the importance of starting fast, but Monroe and Josh Smith combined to miss their first 14 shots. Meanwhile the Bobcats got off to a fast start for the second straight night, hitting 7 of 9 shots to start the game and build a double-digit first quarter lead. Cody Zeller brought immediate energy and production off the bench for the Bobcats with a career-high three blocked shots. NOTES: Former South Carolina Gamecocks defensive end and top NFL draft prospect Jadeveon Clowney attended the game. ... Charlotte had lost five straight games at home to Detroit prior to Wednesday night. ... The more aggressive Bobcats dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Pistons 49-31. DAVIE, Fla. Jim Kelly Jersey . - The Miami Dolphins have never been so bad against the run.Not their 1966 expansion team, which won three games. Not any of the awful defences that kept Dan Marino from winning a Super Bowl. Not even the 2007 team that went 1-15.In the past three games the Dolphins have allowed 661 yards rushing, the worst three-game stretch in franchise history, according to STATS.Disappointing, defensive end Cameron Wake said Tuesday. Not acceptable, defensive co-ordinator Kevin Coyle said.We have to do a better job, coach Joe Philbin said.Time is running out, with playoff hopes already slim. To have any shot at a post-season berth, the Dolphins (7-6) likely need a sweep of their final three games, beginning Sunday at New England.Poor run defence is a big reason the Dolphins have lost two of three past three games. They gave up 201 yards in a defeat at Denver and 183 in a loss to Baltimore. They also allowed 277 in a victory over the woeful New York Jets. Each of those opponents averaged more than 5.5 yards per carry, and Miami was gouged for 21 runs of at least 10 yards.Frustration became evident when defensive tackle Jared Odrick screamed at Philbin on the sideline following a 44-yard run by the Ravens late in Sundays game.Any time you dont play up to the standards we like to uphold, yeah, youre upset, Odrick said. Everybody is upset.Odrick said theres no rift between players and the coaching staff. But the Dolphins are puzzled that theyve been riddled on the ground, because run defence was expected to be a strength. The defensive front is deep and experienced, with Wake, Odrick, Olivier Vernon, Randy Starks and Earl Mitchell part of a rotation that was formidable for much of the season. You always tell your group as a d-line, This game is on our backs. We need to carry this team, Odrick said.Lately theyre taking the team in the wrong direction. Three weeks ago the Dolphins ranked eighth in the NFL in run defence; now theyre 22nd.Miami is allowing 4.4 yards per carry, which ranks fifth-worst in the league and would be the teams highest average since 2007.Weve had self-inflicted wounds in the past few games, Wake said. That doesnt all of a sudden turn us into a bunch of bums.Coyle said the breakdowns of late have been a collective effort, with poor tackling part of the problem. We look at every single play, Coyle said. We look at every defence that we had called and we try to analyze what happened. Each one, theres a reason. Its not one thing you can pin it down on. We just have to do a better job in a lot of areas. Its very difficult because we take a lot of pride in that.Rectifying the situation becomes more complicated because of injuries to linebacker Koa Misi (hamstring) and Jelani Jenkins (foot), who sat out the part of practice the media were allowed to watch Tuesday. On the plus side, cornerback Cortland Finnegan (ankle) practiced and said he absolutely will play Sunday after missing four games. The Dolphins gave up only 89 yards rushing when they beat the Patriots 33-20 in the season opener. Miami pitched a shutout in the second half.Weve just got to go out and do what weve shown we can do, Wake said.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve_Wine Jordan Mills Jersey .com) - The Ottawa Senators will try to keep their slim playoff hopes alive when they face the Chicago Blackhawks who are trying to secure their place in the post-season. The Jets hit the road for a game following a winless homestand (0-2-1) that has dropped them five points back of the Dallas Stars for the second wild card berth in the Western Conference. Winnipegs three-game slide is its longest since an 0-5 stretch from Jan. 2-11, a rut that led to the firing of coach Claude Noel the following day. The Jets won their first four games under Maurice and went 9-2-0 in his first 11 contests on the bench before this current 2-3-2 stretch. Winnipeg ended its residency with a 5-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators, getting goals from Bryan Little, Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom. However, Ondrej Pavelec did not make it past the second period in net, lifted after allowing five goals on 20 shots faced. Al Montoya halted all 12 shots he faced in relief. "Weve been doing everything we can to keep ourselves in games," said Byfuglien. "Theres going to be nights it goes the way it does and thats what happened tonight. We have to find a way, stick to our game plan and just move on." Pavelec should get a chance to rebound tonight and is 3-1-11 in his career versus the Avs with a 1. Matt Duchene and Ryan OReilly both had assists to extend point streaks. Duchene has three goals and eight assists over a career-high seven-game run, while OReilly has notched three goals and seven helpers over his past six games. Nathan MacKinnon, though, had the longest point streak by an 18-year-old in NHL history snapped at 13 consecutive games. Colorado also saw forward Paul Stastny exit the loss after just one shift due to a back injury. He is day-to-day. Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork. Ramik Wilson Jersey .com) - Third-string quarterback Cardale Jones excelled in his first career start, throwing for three touchdowns to lead No. 6 Ohio State to a 59-0 rout of 11th-ranked Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Jones, who attempted just 19 career passes prior to the game, amassed 257 yards on 12-of-17 passing for the Buckeyes (12-1), who have won 11 straight games. The sophomore signal-caller was thrust into action after Big Ten Freshman of the Year J.T. Barrett suffered a broken ankle last week in a 42-28 win over Michigan. Senior Braxton Miller entered camp as the starter, but underwent surgery on his right throwing shoulder prior to the start of the season. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 220 yards -- a Big Ten Championship Game record -- and two scores on 20 carries and Devin Smith hauled in a career-high three touchdown passes on four catches for 137 yards. Ohio State, which finished undefeated in conference play for the third straight season, entered the game at No. 5 in the latest College Playoff Rankings. The four teams that will compete for the championship will be announced on Sunday. I dont think there is any doubt that we are one of the top four teams in America, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said. Heisman hopeful Melvin Gordon carried the ball 26 times for 76 yards for Wisconsin. His longest rush was just 13 yards. I dont think they brought anything surprising, we just didnt play Wisconsin football, said Gordon. Just one of those days. Joel Stave completed just 17 of his 43 passes for 187 yards and three interceptions for the Badgers (10-3), who entered the game with seven straight wins. Alex Erickson had seven grabs for 83 yards. Ohio States opening drive set the tone as Jones completed all three passes and closed out the 6-play, 77-yard endeavor by airing out a 39-yard bomb to Smith for a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. After going three-and-out on its second possession, the Buckeyes just needed two snaps to double their lead. Elliott ran for 12 yards and on the very next play, exploded through a hole up the middle for an 81-yard score with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. Gordon ran for 10 and 13 yards and Erickson caught an 11-yard catch to pick up three straight first downs for the Badgers, but Vonn Bell jumped in front of a receiver to pick off Stave and give the Buckeyes the ball at their own 41. Jones quickly moved Ohio State deep into Wisconsin territory. His passes of 23 and 32 yards to Michael Thomas and Jalin Marshall, respectively, moved the Buckeyes down to their opponents 8. A false start on 3rd-and-Goal and a dropped pass by Elliott resulted in a 23-yard Sean Nuernberger field goal for a 17-0 game early in the second. Wisconsin punted again and Ohio State continued to add to its lead. On 2nd- and-1, Jones 44-yard strike was perfectly placed as Smith made an over-the- shoulder catch in the end zone for a commanding 24-0 lead. Elliott ran the ball into the end zone from 14 yards out with 6:36 remaining in the first half. After Cameron Johnstons 58-yard punt pinned Wisconsin at its 5, Stave hit Sam Arneson for a 13-yard gain. Rashad Frazier sacked Stave and Joey Bosa recovered a Gordon fumble on the next play and returned it four yards for a score with 36 seconds left in the half. The Buckeyes continued to dominate in the second half. Smith made a leaping catch to haul in Jones 42-yard pass and cap Ohio States 5-play, 77-yard drive for a 45-0 advantage early in the third. Staves pass over the middle was intercepted by Doran Grant and returned 23 yards to the Badgers 31 prior to the end of the third quarter. Nuernberger, however, had his attempt blocked and Wisconsin recovered at its own 16. After another stagnant Wisconsin possession, Elliott raced 60 yards down the field, losing a cleat in the process, and Curtis Samuel made it a 52-0 game on a 12-yard TD scamper with 11:39 remaining. Grant intercepted Stave for the second time and Samuel plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 2:25 left to account for the final score. Game Notes Wisconsin suffered its worst loss since a similar 59-0 loss to the Buckeyes on Oct. 20, 1979 ... Ohio State improved to 21-0 when Smith has a TD catch ... Randy Foye added 17 for a Nuggets team that was missing J.J. Hickson, who suffered torn ligament in his right knee on Friday. Wilson Chandler also didnt play (strained left hip) and Jan Vesely didnt return after bruising his rib cage late in the third quarter. Bradley Beal wound up with 21 points as the Wizards wrapped up a four-game road swing with a 1-3 record. Trevor Ariza scored 15 of his 18 points in the first quarter and John Wall added 15, but also had eight turnovers. Evan Fourniers floating jumper with 7:36 remaining started a 7-0 run to give the Nuggets a 91-84 lead, which they wouldnt relinquish. Wall struggled down the stretch, turning the ball over twice in the five minutes on offensive charges. But Wall had a steal and a layup with 12.6 seconds remaining to cut Denvers lead to 99-97. The White Sox got clutch hits, hustled on the bases, and played error-free ball to start the season on a winning note. Abreu doubled on the first pitch he saw leading off the second inning against Ricky Nolasco and scored on De Azas two-run homer to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. He also drove in the go-ahead run with a single during a two-run third after Minnesotas Kurt Suzuki tied it with a two-run single in the top half. It was a good start for Abreu, who insisted he didnt feel any real first-game jitters. That line drive double to right, on a ball that Oswaldo Arcia appeared to misjudge, didnt hurt. "You wanted to get that first one out of the way," Abreu, who signed a six-year, $68 million deal in the off-season, said through an interpreter. "Once you get it, its a very happy moment. The first thing I thought of was my mother." Abreus family is expected to join him at some point this season. He wouldnt say where his mom is, other than "somewhere close, but we cant really comment on that." De Aza made it 5-2 with a solo shot just over the right-field wall in the sixth inning for his first career multihomer game. It was also the first for Chicago on opening day since Jim Thome at Cleveland in 2008, and the first by a White Sox player in a season opener at home since 1960, when Minnie Minoso hit two against the Kansas City Athletics. That was enough for Sale, who allowed three runs and struck out eight and walked one. The two-time All-Star came out with a 5-2 lead with one out and a runner on second in the eighth. Ronald Belisario allowed a two-out RBI single to Suzuki before Donnie Veal retired Joe Mauer on a grounder. Matt Lindstrom came on in the ninth after being announced as the closer by Ventura before the game. The right-hander gave up a one-out double to Chris Colabello before striking out Trevor Plouffe and retiring Arcia on a grounder to the mound for his first save since April 2011 when he was with Colorado. Nolasco took the loss in a shaky debut with Minnesota. One of the top free agent pitchers last winter, he gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings. "I thought we played good, we battled all game," Nolasco said. "Put up some runs, gave a good fight to Chris Sale and made it interesting late. Come back tomorrow or the next day and try and build off that." The Twins are trying to pick themselves up after back-to-back 96-loss seasons and dropping a staggering 291 games the past three years. There was a glitch before the game with the Twins replay system as two blown fuses disabled a pair of monitors in the Minnesota clubhouse. That was fixed in time for the first pitch, but things didnt get much better for the Twins. That is because the White Sox got the big hits from Abreu and De Aza to back Sale. Notes: Konerko had started the previous 15 openers for the White Sox and 16 straight overall. He is in a reduced role after re-signing for one year. ... While the Montreal Canadiens made an incredible run to the Eastern Conference Final in his second season as general manager, Marc Bergevin isnt ready to label his team as contenders just yet. Robin Yount Jersey . Bergevin held court with the media in his end-of-season news conference on Monday, saying theres still plenty to do to make the Habs a championship-calibre club. "I thought our young players learned a lot," he said. "What they learned over the last 17 playoff games is something you cant buy. Were a good team with a young core, but were not a mature team yet. Im happy with our season, but theres still work to do. "Next year, we go back to the same starting line with everybody else. Our first goal will be to make the playoffs and, once youre in, anythings possible. Maybe one day down the road well be a mature team but were not there yet." The No. 1 question posed to Bergevin was the contract status of star defenceman P.K. Subban, who becomes a restricted free agent with arbitration rights on July 1. Subban, who signed a two-year bridge contract after the 2012-13 lockout, captured the Norris Trophy as the NHLs top blueliner last year, was named to the Canadian mens Olympic team that won gold in Sochi in February and was among their top players in the postseason. While many speculate that Subban could pull in an eight-year contract worth $8 million to $9 million a season, Bergevin wasnt showing his hand on anything regarding negotiations. "Contract talks are strategic," he explained, reminding reporters that his policy is to never divulge contract updates in public. "I cant give you a timeline on when itll get done." Bergevin, did however, mention he would like to retain pending UFA Brian Gionta, whos been captain for the last four seasons. "Well see what we can do to bring him back," he said, adding that others have stepped up as leaders as well. "(Josh) Gorges is a really good leader. Carey, P.K., and Patch are taking that role. We have a lot of young leaders who will help moving forward. A guy like Plekanec might not be a player who talks a lot, but by his play and the way he competes, hes a leader." Bergevin also said that head coach Michel Therrien, who has a year left on his contract, will be back - likely with an extension. Therrien raised plenty of eyebrows using third-string goalie Dustin Tokarski over backup Peter Budaj in the conference final after starting netminder Carey Price was injured. There will be plenty of speculation about what the team may do with both goaltenders this summer. "I know him personally," Bergevin said of Budaj. "Hes a great man, loved by his teammates. And through this whole thing he was very positive. Michel had a hunch to put (Tokarski) in for the second game and he gave us a chance to win. Internally well discuss it, but its a nice problem to have." The Canadiens GM was also satisfied this season with the development of young blueliners Nathan Beaulieu, Jarred Tinordi and Greg Pateryn, the first two playing short stints with the NHL club. "I think the day they become everyday players with the Canadiens will be sooner rather than later," he said. "Do I want them to play in NHL next season - yes. "I want some internal competition at camp (next season)." Bergevin also defended the much-criticized handling of the concussion suffered by forward Dale Weise in Game 5 of the conference final. Weise was wobbly and went to the dressing room after a blindside hit by New Yorks John Moore, but returned later in the game. Weise did not play in Game 6 due to what Therrien would only call a "body injury." It appeared the team let Weise back out on the ice even if it looked obvious he had his brain rattled by the hit. Bergevin said the team didnt find out until the next day that Weise had a concussion and was satisfied that he was properly examined according to the league rules before being allowed to return. "The NHL has a protocol that needs to be followed," he said. "If the player says hes OK and the test says hes OK, then hes OK. Players have a list of things they need to do before they can return to play and he passed with flying colours. "Its flawed, but Im not a doctor. We all worry about our players, but we can only go by what were given." - with CP files Stephen Vogt Jersey .com) - A chant of Zeke reverberated around AT&T Stadium before Ezekiel Elliott powered into the end zone for his fourth and final touchdown. NEW YORK -- In what seemed like an ultimate grudge match, players on both sides of the Columbus Blue Jackets-New York Rangers rivalry stepped up to inflict damage on their former team. Jannik Hansen Jersey . Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and assist, and the Blue Jackets edged the Rangers 4-3 in a shootout on Monday night. Former Blue Jackets star Rick Nash -- acquired in the deal that sent Dubinsky to Columbus -- did his best to lift the Rangers, but his two power-play goals were only enough to get New York even. He and Mats Zuccarello were stopped by Sergei Bobrovsky in the tiebreaker. "It wouldve been nice to get that other point," Nash said. "Weve got to come out a lot better, and we cant keep making mistakes that end up in the back of our net." Bobrovsky made 40 saves through overtime in his first action in over a month to backstop Columbus win at the end of a 2-2 road trip. "This was a good two points for us," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said. "Bob was great with big save after big save. Dubinsky was really big for us. He played a strong game." Mark Letestu and Ryan Johansen scored against Henrik Lundqvist in the shootout. "Im happy we got a point. We played well for 60 minutes," Lundqvist said. "The difference is I didnt stop the breakaways and (Bobrovsky) did -- one in the second and in the shootout. I have some work to do." Lundqvist had the night off Saturday when backup Cam Talbot won 7-1 at Toronto. Lundqvist is 2-1-1 since sitting for three straight games in late December. Nash had tied it 3-3 with his second of the night, and ninth of the season, at 6:55 of the third period as David Savard served a penalty for delay of game. Defenceman James Wisniewski also had a goal and assist, and Cam Atkinson scored on a second-period breakaway to help the Blue Jackets win. "Always good to end road trips on a high note," Wisniewski said. "Weve been coming together as a team more and more." Bobrovsky shined in his return from a 14-game absence caused by a strained groin. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner had been out since Dec. 3 but showed no rust in a matchup with Lundqvist -- the Vezina winner in 2012. The Rangers came away with a point because of Nash, acquired from Columbus in 2012. Brian Boyle cut the deficit to 3-2 at 4:53 of the third, and Lundqvist made 36 saves through overtime for New York, which had won three of four before returning home. The game took a noticeable turn 21 seconds into the second when Rangers forward Chris Kreider drove Columbus defenceman Fedor Tyutin into the left-wing boards with a shoulder-to-shoulder hit that left Tyutin down on his stomach. Dubinsky skated over to challenge Kreider, but a fight didnt ensue. Kreider was given a major penalty for boarding and was ejected. Dubinsky received a minor for roughing. Tyutin left soon after and didnt return to the game. "I looked at the replay. He tried to stop just before," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said of Kreider. "It seemed like he stopped, and sort of a follow-through from their player. Anytime a guy gets pushed into the boards the way he did, the referees dont have much of a choice." Vigneault doesnt expect Kreider to be suspended. Richards, who said the team will know more about Tyutins status on Tuesday, called the injury "more of a charley horse than anything else." With the teams skating 4-on-4, Atkinson stole the puck from defenceman Anton Stralman at the New York blue line, and raced alone the other way. He received little resistance from Stralman and beat Lundqvist to restore Columbus lead at 2-1. Columbus didnt take further advantage of the three-minute power play. Just 27 seconds after Columbus killed a penalty, Dubinsky made a perfect pass from the left-wing boards across the Rangers zone to a streaking Wisniewski on the right side. Wisniewski fired a rising shot that got in under the crossbar to make it 3-1 with 3:13 left in the second. Bobrovsky stopped 15 shots in each of the first two periods. He denied Brad Richards at the right post with his pads when Richards took a pair of whacks at a loose puck. Benoit Pouliot was stopped earlier in the period on a breakaway. Nash tied it 1-1 when he snapped a rising wrist shot from the left circle that caromed in off the left post with 52.8 seconds left in the first. Dubinsky had staked Columbus to a 1-0 lead with 2:53 remaining when Wisniewskis shot hit him in the leg and deflected in. Landen Lucas finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks off the bench and Perry Ellis also netted eight for the Jayhawks (17-3, 6-1 Big 12), who have won three straight and eight of their last nine games. It was a very frustrating game, and were very fortunate that we won because I think that they outplayed us, Kansas head coach Bill Self said. Kenrich Williams scored 13 points with nine boards and Trey Zeigler supplied 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ziegler went in for a layup and knocked down the ensuing free throw to make it a 59-57 game with 33 seconds left, but Brannen Greene knocked down two foul shots and blocked Zeigler at the other end before making another from the line for a five-point game. Washburns dunk made it a 64-61 game with seven seconds to play. He then pulled down Masons missed free throw, but his long 3-point attempt clanked off the rim at the buzzer. Kansas went ahead early, as Masons jumper ignited an 18-2 burst. Wayne Selden Jr. capped it with a triple for a 23-10 advantage at the midway point of the first half. Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock was behind the bench to lead Canada to a second straight gold medal at the Sochi Olympics. Manny Machado Jersey . He wont have to face the goaltender he rode to that honour when the Red Wings take on the Montreal Canadiens as Carey Price will not be in uniform for the next two games. The game can be seen live on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Price was hurt at the start of Wednesdays practice after facing just one shot as the team worked on their power play. He left the ice in discomfort and appeared to be favouring his leg. During the Olympics, the Canadiens starting goaltender posted consecutive shutouts for Canada in the semifinals and gold medal game and ended the Olympic tournament with a 5-0 record, a 0.59 goals against average and .972 save percentage. Montreal enters Tuesday hoping to pick up where it left off. The Canadiens won their last three games before the Olympics and went 5-1-1 over their seven final outings prior to the break. The Habs are sitting one point behind Tampa Bay for second place in the Atlantic and eight in back of Boston for the division lead. The Canadiens also are locked in a tie with rival Toronto in both the Atlantic and East standings. The Canadiens will get forward Alex Galchenyuk back in the lineup on Wednesday for the first time since Jan. 6 when he broke his hand in a game against Florida. The sophomore has 10 goals and 13 assists in 44 games this season. The Red Wings posted a 4-1 home win over Montreal on Jan. 24 in the first of four regular-season meetings between the clubs this season. It was the third win for Detroit over the last four games of this series. but the Red Wings head coach is now faced with the unenviable task of getting Detroit back to the playoffs for a 23rd straight season. Babcocks Red Wings hope to aid their postseason quest on Wednesday, when they return from the NHLs Olympic break to visit the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Detroit would be in the playoffs if the season ended right now, but the club is only one point ahead of a three teams -- Columbus, Ottawa and Washington -- for the Eastern Conferences final berth. While Babcock was coaching Canada to gold, the captain of his NHL team -- Henrik Zetterberg -- was recovering from recent back surgery. Zetterberg suited up for Team Sweden once in Sochi before returning to the United States to have a procedure that removed what Red Wings general manager Ken Holland called a "floating piece of a disk lodged in a nerve in his back." After undergoing the surgery on Friday, Zetterberg, who is leading Detroit in goals (16) and assists (32) this season, is expected to be out of action for 7-to-8 weeks. Zetterbergs absence could make it difficult for the Red Wings to keep their amazing postseason appearance streak going, but the club is still eager to get back to the task at hand. After visiting Montreal, which is six points ahead of Detroit in the Atlantic Division and East standings, the Red Wings will make a stop to battle the playoff-hopeful Senators on Thursday. "Two of the biggest games of the year by far. Were chasing Montreal and Ottawa is chasing us," said Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey. "So theres nothing like having 20-odd days off and coming back and playing huge games. We know the playoffs are going to come down to one or two points, so easily it could come down to these two games. We know that going in and that?s why were so focused on getting ready for them." Wednesdays game marks the continuation of a five-game road trip that began before the Olympics. Detroit, which is 15-9-4 as the guest this season compared to a poor 11-11-8 mark at home, split road games against Florida and Tampa Bay before the NHL went on hiatus. Following Thursdays showdown with the Senators, the Red Wings will have four full days of rest before capping their swing next Tuesday at New Jersey. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Nick Markakis had answers for both of the home runs from Texas slugger Adrian Beltre. The Baltimore leadoff man hit a tying homer after Beltres first blast, and his go-ahead single followed a three-run shot that pulled the Rangers even, as the Orioles went on to a 6-5 victory in Texas on Wednesday night. Markakis single in the sixth inning came after Beltre wiped out a 5-2 lead. Chris Davis had put Baltimore up by three with a solo shot against his former team -- a night after Nelson Cruz did something similar by homering in his first game as an opponent at Texas. "Weve have been having good at bats up there," Markakis said. "Seems like when they get the ball over the plate, weve been getting good swings on it and finding the hole, finding the gap." Cruz had three singles and reached twice on errors by Luis Sardinas, a surprise fill-in at shortstop for Elvis Andrus. It was the second time in less than a week the two-time All-Star wasnt in the starting lineup. Bud Norris (4-5) allowed six hits and five runs in five innings for the Orioles, and the bullpen pitched four scoreless innings. Zach Britton earned his fifth save. Davis, who was traded to the Orioles by Texas in 2011 and led the majors with 53 homers last year, had his eighth this season on a towering shot to right field for a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Cruz, who chose Baltimore over Texas as a free agent in the off-season and leads the big leagues with 21 home runs, hit a three-run homer in a series-opening win Tuesday. Markakis hit his fourth homer against rookie starter Nick Martinez (1-2) in the third. The left-handed hitters go-ahead single came off Aaron Poreda, a lefty brought in to face him. "It doesnt really matter with Nick," manager Buck Showalter said. "There are so few in baseball that left and right doesnt matter." Beltre, who drove in all five Texas runs, gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead with an opposite-field shot off the facing of the upper deck in right field in the first inning and went the other away again in the fifth for his eighth homer of the season. Chris Tillman Jersey. Beltres tying shot came after Norris was hit on the right forearm on a one-hopper by Mitch Moreland that turned into a single. After a lengthy chat with manager Buck Showalter and the trainer, Norris stayed in and got two quick strikes on Beltre, who fouled off three more pitches before sending a line drive into the Texas bullpen for his third homer in two nights. "When Beltre goes to punching the ball out of the ballpark, he does it in bunches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He put us on his back. We just couldnt put enough runs across the board to help." Norris left the game after the inning with a right forearm contusion. "Im pretty sore," Norris said. "You dont know where you want to get hit, but I guess its the forearm. I got some muscle on it so I guess you could look at it that way." Both of Sardinas errors led to runs. He dropped a popup with two outs in the first, and Cruz scored on a single by Adam Jones. A throwing error in the third came before another run-scoring single by Jones and a sacrifice fly from J.J. Hardy. Andrus grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the sixth and stayed in at shortstop. NOTES: Orioles RHP Miguel Gonzalez was scratched from his Thursday start in Texas and replaced by RHP Chris Tillman. Gonzalez is nursing soreness on his right side, but theres no diagnosis. HOUSTON -- Its almost enough to make a defensive co-ordinator drool. Phillip Gaines Jersey . Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, the Houston Texans No. 1 pick in the draft, was on the field Tuesday for the first time with former NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt. As both players get used to new defensive co-ordinator Romeo Crennel, Clowney has eyes on the All-Pro as he eases into the NFL in off-season workouts. "Just watching him work it makes you want to work even more," Clowney said. "Sometimes we maybe go into an extra workout with him. Hes a team guy. Always says he can help you no matter what. (Im) just happy to be beside him out there on the field." The defensive playmaker out of South Carolinas speed and ability had scouts fawning over his potential years ago -- and now the number of ways he can be deployed in a 3-4 defence. Part of that potential involves getting Clowney and Watt on the field together in games. With the departure of Antonio Smith to the Oakland Raiders in free agency, Watt will need a foil. While Clowney is expected to see time at both outside linebacker and as a defensive end, having him on the other side of Watt could take up that slack. Still, it is early in camp and Watt knows what Clowney is going through. While the expectations are high, things will take time. "I dont know enough yet to tell you. Were in just helmets right now," Watt said when asked about Clowneys potential impact. "I know hes in the playbook and hes working hard. As we go forward well see a lot more." Clowneys first goal, like that of all the rookies, is to transition to his team and to the NFL. For Clowney, that includes learning the playbook and even learning names. "For any rookie its very difficult to make the jump from college to pro. It doesnt really matter if they were drafted number one or undrafted, theyre all trying to learn and keep pace with the veterans," coach Bill OBrien said. "I think hes doing a decent job of and hes working hard at it." Star receiver Andre Johnson was absent from the session. One of the franchises marquee players, Johnson said two weeks ago that he would not attend Texans workouts. "I said last week that he and I have had positive conversations," OBrien said. "I have a ton of respect for him. Wed love to have him here right now, but thats up to him. Were moving forward with the players that are here and these guys are working extremely hard." With Johnsons absence and a quarterback competition that is open and far from solved, Houstons defence could be called upon to carry the load early in the season. A big part of that equation will be figuring out how to best deploy playmakers such as Watt and Clowney. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Jersey .
